This week, I saw an ad for the Mizuno Wave Rider 20.  I really hope the new model is as good as the old.  I did two runs as commutes, which allowed me to enjoy some art and check in on the construction project I’m following.

Clothing & Gear

ShoesMizuno Wave Rider 20.  I finally saw an ad in my Facebook feed for this shoe, which is coming sometime in October.  I’m not an expert, but to me, it looked like it has more cushioning than the Wave Rider 19. That scared me a little but I’ll wait to judge until I purchase it.  I still have an unworn pair of the 19s, so I’m good through the New York City Marathon in November.

Nutrition & Hydration

RXBar packaging
RXBar packaging

Sports drink.  Glukos Energy Powder.  This product came in this month’s Stridebox.  I carried it with me on my medium run last Friday.  The first challenge was that the package didn’t say how much water to add.  I went with about 18 ounces and ice.  It was good.  It wasn’t as flavorful as Vitalyte or LiquidIV, so I still prefer those products, but some people might like a lighter drink.  One packet is 130 calories and 37g of carbohydrate.  For electrolytes, it has 79mg of sodium, 350mg of potassium.

Pre-workout NutritionRXBar (Chocolate Sea Salt).  I was a little hungry before my medium run on Wednesday and tried this bar, which I got in one of my recent Strideboxes.  The packaging is pretty clever – the wrapper shows you what’s in the bar.  Nutritionally, it’s 200 calories with 22g of carbohydrate, 12g of protein, and 9g of fat.  I liked it but not enough to seek it.  But if I saw it in a store, I’d buy it again.

Routes

Construction.  I drove by the construction site I’ve been following for this training cycle on Thursday when I ran home from work.  Demolition started in earnest this past week.

Sights.  I ran to work on Tuesday morning and my route took me past the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.  Looking ahead to the intersection, my brain interrupted…  What did you just see?

I double-backed and marveled at this installation.  It’s called “Still Life With Spirit and Xitle,” by Jimmie Durham and it’s very striking.

Media & Motivation

Music. “Heathens,” by Twenty One Pilots.  In addition to Spotify Discover Weekly, I find new music by sampling the top songs on iTunes.

(My “Songs of the Week” playlist on Spotify.)

Podcasts.  “Why You Need to do Workouts You Hate,” by RunnersConnect.  This podcast featured Tina’s coach and husband, Steve Picucci.  I liked that he kept saying how every runner is different and what might work for one person, might not work for another.

Motivation.  “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best”. – Tim Duncan

I’ve been working very hard this week to get my good to better.  Getting my better to best might take another training cycle.
