Training Supplement – October 5, 2016

The rain made for hazardous conditions last week.  Sia supplied another great running song, though.  I watched an inspirational documentary that brought back memories of Ragnar Key West…  I cracked my phone yesterday!  Another reason to hate Hains Point.

Arm Bands.  I’ve been really happy with  my current armband.  But, this week, I learned, “An armband works best when the phone is in the arm band!”  I learned that lesson the hard way when, after putting my phone in the band but not putting the security fabric flap over it, my phone slid out of the case and crashed to the ground.  Absolutely and completely my fault but I’m not taking my phone out of it’s protective case until I can get it repaired or replaced.  Oh, and it’s another reason for me to hate Hains Point.

Tops.  Oiselle New Satellite Tank.  The Oiselle top I ordered last week arrived.  At this point, I’ve only run in it once but I thought it was very comfortable.  It felt a little heavy for deep-summer running but a good weight now that fall is approaching.

Nutrition & Hydration

Nutrition.  For some reason, despite establishing my gastro-intestinal tract isn’t tolerating pasta, I tried a spaghetti dinner before my long run on Saturday.  The results were the same.  I’m satisfied now that I need to seek out something like fish and rice as a pre-race meal for the marathon in November.

Hazards.  It rained a lot last week – from last Wednesday until Saturday, which made for slippery conditions on the trails.  On top of that, the change in seasons meant the sun came up later and set sooner, which meant thinking more about viability on my runs, especially since I did a few of them as run commutes.  I made it through unscathed, though.

Media & Motivation

Music. The Greatest” by Sia.  As anyone who follows my race playlists knows, “Chandelier,” by Sia is one of my favorite songs for ending a race.  This might be a good mid-race song.

(My “Songs of the Week” playlist on Spotify.)

Podcasts.  “Equal Thirds (Kate Murphy),” by Pace the Nation.  I listened to this podcast during my long run on Saturday.  It was great listening to a young, local talent who seems to appreciate the value of being part of a team while also excelling individually.  But, at the end of the episode, I heard the hosts were planning a post-New York City Marathon meet-up.  I’m planning to attend.

Websites or Blogs.  “Race Report Generator,” by Salty Running.  I have to confess – I didn’t actually try the tool, but I thought it was clever.  I couldn’t help but think, Are race reports this formulaic?  Okay, I really thought, Are MY race reports this formulaic?!  Maybe but I’ll keep writing them for anyone willing to read them for a while.

Film.  “From Fat to Finish Line.”  A friend in my running community wrote that she was watching this film over the weekend and after looking it up online decided to watch it, too.  Although I’ve never been heavy, I find inspiration from people who have lost a lot of weight.  I can’t relate to the experience but can respect the work and one particular part of the documentary tugged at my heart strings.  Plus, I ran Ragnar Florida Keys in 2014 and reminisced every time they showed Runner #3!  (It looks like this was filmed the year before.)

Motivation.  “A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.” – Elbert Hubbard

Even though I’m not expecting great things at the New York City Marathon, I’m still trained as though I was.
