Training Supplement – October 27, 2016

Supplement-102716I bought the new Mizuno Wave Rider 20s and…  I love them!  I thought a lot about increasing the mobility in my legs.  I listened to my favorite songs from The Walking Dead this week.  I’m motivated to run aggressively at the New York City Marathon in 10 days!

Clothing & Gear

Shoes. Mizuno Wave Rider 20.  I thought my 19s would get me to marathon race day.  However, going into my taper, both of them were nearing 300 miles.  So, I bought a pair of the 20s online.  I’ve worn them twice now and… I love them!  I think they’re slightly lighter than the 19s and the ride is a little softer but not mushy.  It seems to fits a little more snug in the forefoot, which is great for me since my feet are on the narrow side.  I’m so relieved that I don’t hate this shoe!

Nutrition & Hydration

Weight.  As expected, my weight has gone up during my taper.  I’ve found my body naturally wants to be in the upper 120s and that’s about where it is right now.  I think I tend to race well when I’m in the low 120s, but I just couldn’t get myself to focus on diet this marathon cycle.  Maybe next time.

Nutrition. With The New York City Marathon 10 days away, I locked down my pre-race meal to something like salmon with rice and vegetables.  That seemed to agree with my stomach during workouts the next day.  I’ve checked Yelp for Mediterranean restaurants near my hotel and there weren’t a lot of options.  If I don’t find one, I have a microwave and refrigerator in my hotel room.  There’s a grocery store a block from my hotel where I could probably find something or I could bringing a meal from home.

Routes

Sights.  I ran through Crystal City this weekend and came across this rural.  It’s by Chelove.  I like the vibrant colors and how it made what might seem like graffiti on first glance transform into art.

Media & Motivation

Music. I stayed up late watching The Walking Dead season premier on Sunday night.  Here are some of the songs that have been on the show that are on my running playlist.

The Parting Glass,” by the Wailin’ Jennys. Given how things turned out, I should start with this one.  (There is a version by the actress that plays Beth, Emily Kinney, but I like this rendition better.)

Be Not So Fearful,” by A.C. NewmanThis is the song from the show that I play the most.

Hold On,” by Tom Waits.  I like this one, too.

(My “Songs of the Week” playlist on Spotify.)

Podcasts.  “The Jinx (Pete Sherry),” by Pace the Nation.  Recent episodes have focused on local high school talent, including Kate Murphy.  But, since I think my recent running woes are relate to range of motion issues, I was really interested in the guest’s practice.  Reston, Virginia is a bit far for me to go for therapy, but it got me thinking about working with someone.

Dean Karnazes“, by The Runner’s World Show.  Although knowing his name, I didn’t know anything about Dean Karnazes‘ accomplishments so I enjoyed that segment.  But, I was even more interested in the discussion about mobility.  I may check out the video at some point but this close to the New York City Marathon, I don’t want to try anything new.

Motivation. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.” – Les Brown

I’m thinking of going aggressive for the New York City Marathon.  My brain (and race calculators) are telling me 3:35 is probably what I should aim for, but my heart is saying I should go for sub-3:30.
