Clothing & Gear

As I start getting ready to train for the New York City Marathon, I’m looking at my clothing and gear carefully.  For some reason, I don’t have as many items for summer running as I do for winter.  I’ve been looking online for new tops and bottoms that could be comfortable for Washington, D.C.’s heat and humidity.  I’ve also retired a few pieces that have either seen a lot of miles or never fit very well in the first place.

Singlets.  My replacement Saucony Hydralite Tank arrived today.  The extra small is a little fitted and short wasted but it’s definitely a better fit than the small.  I hate being between sizes.

Nutrition & Hydration

I was on vacation in San Diego for most of the week and didn’t follow a diet at all.  For example:

Marg, Chips and Salsa

Fish Tacos
Fish Tacos

Electrolytes.  I’m down to my last Crank Sports e-Gel after consuming one last Saturday during the Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon.  I really think taking in electrolytes saved me in this race and at the Boston Marathon.

Media & Motivation

Songs. “Tongue Tied,” by Grouplove.  I have no idea what this song is about but it’s strangely uplifting.

Podcasts.  I’m following so many podcasts now that I feel like I’d have to carve out at least 6 hours a week to listen to them all.

  • Run for Life, Not Just for Today,” by RunnersConnect.  I listened to this podcast about the founders of Strava on my flight to California.  Twice.blog
  • Episode 2: Coach Brad Hudson,” by Final Surge.  I’m using the Hudson Elite Coaching services so it was nice to hear Brad Hudson talk about his coaches, training philosophy, and books.

Blogs.  “Heat Acclimation,” by Hansons Coaching Services.  This was a nice post about how the body adapts to heat, how long that might take, and how heat impacts race performance.

Motivation.  “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.  Live the life you’ve imagined.”  – Henry David Thoreau

I traveled to my hometown this week, (although, at this point in my life I’ve lived in the Washington, D.C. area longer than anywhere else.)  It’s hard for me to step off the plane in beautiful San Diego, California and not question why I don’t live there permanently.  Spending the weekend catching up with high school friends reminded me where I came from and all the wonderful people who have shaped my life.  But, I’m also happy that I took a chance 25+ years ago to move out east for different opportunities.
