2021 Year End Review - Banner 2

2021 Year End Review

A very late year-end review for 2021! It was another year of injury and illness. Last February, I fell, breaking two fingers and skinning my knee! In May, I started training for the 2021 London Marathon (as part of the inaugural Wanda Age Group Championship). But in September, I tested positive for COVID-19! A month after recovering, I ran the 2021 Boston Marathon! Unfortunately, I did not re-qualify for next year’s race. For the rest of the year, I ran relatively low mileage but focused on interval training in an attempt to get my speed back in 2022.

Winter of 2020 – Week 4

Happy New Year! This year, my New Year’s Eve celebration was mild enough for a medium long-run the next day. While I managed to get my runs in this week, my thoughts were mostly on next week’s real estate closing. I was off from work this week, which enabled me to start some runs later in the morning.

Fall of 2020 – Week 2

Re-publishing my 2012 Boston Marathon race report had me thinking about pushing myself outside my comfort zone. On Tuesday, I completed the RunWashington Distance Derby Strava Challenge segment on Hains Point as my weekly speedwork. On Thursday, I finished my medium-long run in a relatively rapid 9:32 pace!

Summer of 2020 – Week 5

The week started with a slow, hilly long run at the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. For my other workouts, I settled on paces based on the VDOT tables in Daniels’ Running Formula. Meanwhile, my mind wandered to whether I should bother training for a fall marathon or not.

It was the first week of my new training cycle!  Even though there isn’t a goal race on my calendar, the prospect of getting faster is providing motivation. On Saturday, I even scoped out my neighborhood track for next week’s interval workout.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 9

Sunday’s double in 80 degree heat almost turned into a medical emergency.  On Thursday, I just couldn’t will myself to run in the heat again and my weekly mileage suffered for it.  Generally, I find myself trying to reconcile two very different training adaptations – running 26 miles fast and completing 50 miles slow.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 3

Two weeks into my 2019 New York City Marathon training cycle and I traveled for work.  I arrived in Athens, Greece on Thursday and even though I was jet-lagged, completed a treadmill run in that night.  Out on the roads the next day, I was rewarded with two amazing sights!

2019 Cleveland Marathon – Week 3

Essentially, this was a repeat of Week 17 from my 2019 Boston Marathon training only this time, I finished it feeling race-ready! I constantly wondered whether I’m adequately recovered, though. Training Schedule May 5th – May 11th Sunday: Long Run.

2019 Cleveland Marathon – Week 1

Recovery from the 2019 Boston Marathon was short.  I took two days off, “reverse tapered”, and by the following week, was already training for the for the 2019 Cleveland Marathon! But, sickness knocked me down for a few days.  Training
